10 Great Reasons to Study at The University of Leeds:

Our wonderful Study Abroad Ambassador, Alexandra, has created this brilliant post to show you why you should choose Leeds!

The Campus:

  1. The Leeds University campus boasts beauty like no other! From the old red buildings like the Great Hall, to the modern departments such as the Esther Simpson Business Building, our campus offers students an extensive range of places to study, socialise and learn!

The City:

2. Leeds City Centre is one of the most famous and largest cities in the UK. It has lots of historical attributes, as well as a hugely diverse culture and a fantastic way of life. It has tonnes of places to escape too, include the famous Kirkgate Market and the Leeds Docks only a short walk from the university!

The Food:

3. Some of the restaurants and quick eats that you can find in Leeds are simply unbeatable! The city has hundreds of restaurants to choose from every type of cuisine. Personal favourites include Salvo’s Italian, Zaap Thai, and Bakery164 which is opposite the University Parkinson Building!

The Libraries:

4. The University has four libraries on campus, all offering extensive places to study and thousands of books and archives to read or rent. Each library has a different aesthetic with handy bookable study rooms to complete group projects or hold meetings! My favourite library is the Laidlaw library with its modern feel and great views of the city centre.

The Societies:

5. The University has more than 300 student led clubs and societies, which are always open and welcoming to new faces. Societies range from academic, to sport, to creative based clubs. There is something out there for everyone! My favourite soc is the Women in Leadership society.

The Union:

6. Leeds University Union is located in the heart of campus, boasting plenty of events, support groups, opportunities to vote in elections and fabulous places to study and hang out with friends. The Union hosts a plethora of activities for students, my favourite being Dog Therapy every Monday in the entrance, not to mention the mighty ‘Fruity Friday’ club event held in the Union’s venue Stylus!

The Students

7. If you are interested in making lifelong friends, finding like-minded or different people to what you may have done before, then Leeds University is the place for you! With over 38,000 students from over 170 countries, you can be assured of the fact that the students at Leeds are friendly, keen to get to know others, and have lots of fun together both during the day and on nights out – Leeds is a student-led city hence the opportunities to meet new people are endless

The Countryside:

8. Leeds University is the perfect place to study if you enjoy long walks in the countryside. Located just a bus or train journey away from the city are some of the most famous and stunning parks and trails in the UK. Personal favourites include the Golden Acre Park, Harewood Park, Roundhay Park and the Meanwood Valley Trail so close to campus and the student residential area of Headingley!

The Classes:

9. The delivery of course materials in Leeds is brilliant. With a huge range of modules to choose from and the option to carry out ‘discovery’ modules which are different from your normal field of study, the sky is your limit! With fantastic state of the art lecture theatres and numerous seminar rooms in each department, you will be sure to enjoy the teaching here. Lecturers and professors are friendly, always willing to help, and all have your best interests at heart!

The Surrounding Areas:

10. The city of Leeds is located in the heart of the North of the England. With great travel connections for day trips or weekend stays, big cities like Manchester or Sheffield and beautiful smaller cities like York and Durham are literally on the doorstep of Leeds. Travel tickets to these locations are relatively cheap on an off-peak basis and it is a great way to explore surrounding areas with friends!
