7 reasons why you should study at Leeds!

By Olivia Lancaster

  1. Study abroad opportunities

Leeds has one of the widest range of options of studying abroad in the UK (300+ university exchange partners, with more added each year!), with most courses offering the opportunity to gain international experience during your time at university. If spending an entire year abroad sounds too daunting, then there are also abundant summer schools and research opportunities abroad in Asia, Europe or Latin America, amongst others!

2. Vibrant and beautiful city

Known as the “unofficial capital of Yorkshire”, Leeds is one of the UKs largest cultural centres. The Corn exchange, Trinity shopping centre, more than 200 parks and open spaces, Headingley Stadium and Elland Road are just some of the attractions in this bustling city – there is always something to do.

3. Careers service and employment opportunities

Consistently ranked in top 20 universities in the UK, Leeds University is highly respected by employers. To boost your employability even further, is the comprehensive careers service offered by the union with support and advice from experts. As a law student, I participated in pro-bono volunteering offered by the University in association with Cerebra charity; it was an invaluable experience that I really enjoyed and that looks great on my CV! There are even various roles offered within the Student Union, from working in the student bar to becoming a student ambassador – the flexibility offered by these jobs is hard to find elsewhere.

4. Nightlife and entertainment options

Leeds boasts some of the best nightlife in the north, with popular student bars such as Dry Dock, Hyde Park Pub and Brudenell Social Club becoming regular haunts for many students each week. There is also First Direct Arena and O2 Academy for live music and concerts, alongside smaller local business, such as my personal favourite, Sela jazz bar.

5. Sport

Leeds United FC, Yorkshire Cricket Club and Leeds Rhinos are the three world-famous sports teams that hail from the city. As the birthplace of Rugby League, Leeds naturally boasts high-performing male and female rugby league teams, alongside 70+ other impressive sports societies, known as the Leeds Gryphons. Over 5000 students represent the University every week, and even more take part in volunteering and teaching opportunities in sport offered by the University. If sport isn’t your thing, however, there are over 300 other student-run societies to try out instead!

    6. Countryside and natural beauty

Stunning parks within city, and easily accessible public transport links to the infamous Yorkshire dales and Lake District. Not to mention, Leeds Bradford Airport is also located a mere 8 miles north of the city centre, serving the city with domestic and international flights.

    7. Large student population (especially international)

Thanks to the five major universities in the city (University of Leeds, Leeds Beckett, Leeds Trinity, Leeds Arts and Leeds Conservatoire, Leeds boasts a wide and vibrant student community.
